Certifications get you a callback. They do not move an offer at a company that interviews technically. CKA, Terraform Associate and a cloud associate badge are real and worth holding, especially for services companies and capability centres where they are a staffing signal. What no certificate does is substitute for having operated something. You also may not need a course at all: if you already run infrastructure at work, go straight to the question bank and practise the loop, because the gap between you and an offer is usually diagnostic practice rather than knowledge. The courses
Trace a request through Linux, networking and cloud permissions. Build a diagnostic script, size a small service and defend its operating boundaries.
Take a change from reviewed infrastructure through artifact promotion and Kubernetes rollout. Test identity boundaries, recovery paths and a Gateway migration.
Turn service objectives into alerts, investigate competing failure hypotheses and recover state safely. Finish with a timed incident and a reviewable follow-up plan.

How to evaluate a DevOps program before you pay
What is on offer runs from a downloadable syllabus to a six month cohort with live teaching and a placement promise, and the price runs across two orders of magnitude. Either can be the right purchase. Six questions separate them, and a programme worth its money will answer all six without flinching.
- Which gap is this closing for me?
The gap worth paying to close is operational: you understand the tools but have never been responsible for something when it broke. If you already carry a pager, a program is the wrong purchase and drilling the loop is the right one.
- Do I break things and fix them, or only build them?
Installation is the easy half. A syllabus with no module where a working system is deliberately broken and you have to diagnose it is teaching configuration, not operations, and the interview tests operations.
- Who teaches, and have they been on call?
Ask whether instructors have personally operated production systems, and how recently. The tooling turned over substantially between 2023 and now, and so did what interviews ask about it.
- What exactly is the placement claim?
An advertised average salary is almost always drawn from whoever chose to report one. Ask what fraction of a cohort is placed, what number sits in the denominator, and what the median was rather than the mean.
- What is the certificate actually worth?
A program's own certificate is worth very little; a vendor certification like CKA is worth a callback. If a program's main pitch is its badge or a university logo rather than what you will be able to do, price it as instruction only.
- Can I test the teaching before paying?
Anyone confident in what they teach will show you some of it for nothing. When every page ends in a form and a callback, you are being sold to rather than taught.

What any DevOps course should cover
Hold this against ours and against anyone else’s. A syllabus made largely of YAML walkthroughs and console tours is teaching the surface of a toolchain, and the surface is both the part that turns over every couple of years and the part a panel cares least about.

Is a DevOps course worth it?
It depends which gap you are closing. If you have never operated a production system, a structured course with real projects compresses learning you would otherwise get accidentally over years. If you already run infrastructure at work, you are better served by drilling the interview loop, because the gap between you and an offer is usually diagnostic practice rather than knowledge.
Which DevOps certification is worth taking?
CKA first, because it is performance-based and time-pressured, so preparing for it makes you faster at exactly the diagnostic work interviews test. Then HashiCorp Terraform Associate, which is cheap and covers state, backends and modules. Then one cloud associate certification matched to your target employers. Stop there.
Do certifications actually get you a DevOps job?
They get you a callback, which is not nothing. At services companies and capability centres they are a staffing signal and materially improve your shortlisting rate, and some client accounts require them contractually. At product companies that run a technical loop they are close to neutral, because the interview will establish what you know regardless.
How much do DevOps courses cost?
Anywhere from the price of a book to several months of salary. At the top end sit cohort programmes running six to eight months with live teaching, projects and placement help. At the bottom sit self-directed materials, this site among them. The spread is not a quality gradient, it is two different purchases: one is buying a career change, the other is buying the last mile before a loop you could already nearly pass.
Can I become a DevOps engineer without a course?
Yes, and most people in the role did. What you cannot skip is operating something real that other people depend on, because that is what every interview asks about. A home cluster with no users teaches you installation. A service a few people rely on teaches you operations.
What should a DevOps course actually cover?
Judge any course, including ours, against this: Linux beneath the tooling, one cloud with real depth on identity and networking, Kubernetes as a control loop rather than a set of manifests, Terraform state and drift, pipeline design and rollback, observability with SLOs and error budgets, and security in the pipeline. A course that is mostly YAML walkthroughs is teaching configuration, not engineering.
How long should preparing for a DevOps interview take?
For an engineer already running infrastructure, four to six focused weeks is realistic: two on troubleshooting and Linux fundamentals, one on design with the arithmetic practised out loud, and one on coding and behavioral stories. Coming from a non-infrastructure background it is considerably longer, and no course shortcuts the operational experience.
