DevOps & SRE Salary: what the numbers actually say
How to compare DevOps and SRE offers across locations without mixing base salary, total compensation, levels or unreliable samples.

Read the evidence before the number
Use a dated employer posting for the target location and level when one is available. A salary survey needs its sample size, collection period and compensation definition. A published range does not promise an offer at either end.
The company table below has its own source labels. It is not a census of DevOps pay, and this editorial review does not re-verify those company records. Confirm a current range with the employer before relying on it.
United States
US Bureau of Labor Statistics data describes broader occupations such as software developers. It does not provide a DevOps-specific total-compensation benchmark. Do not relabel an occupational wage figure as senior SRE compensation.
For an offer, separate annual base salary, target bonus, signing payments and equity vesting by year. Compare the offered level with the target role's published band. Keep an equity-price scenario separate from guaranteed cash.
India
Ask for a written CTC breakdown: fixed gross pay, variable pay, employer contributions, gratuity assumptions, joining payments and equity. CTC and take-home pay answer different questions.
Compare employers individually. A global capability centre, services firm and product company can each contain very different teams and levels. This guide does not substantiate universal lakh bands, a crore threshold or a fixed multiplier between those categories.
Europe
Compare offers within the same country and employment arrangement before comparing across currencies. Identify gross annual cash, bonus and equity; review working hours, pension contributions and on-call terms alongside pay.
A city median based on an unclear sample cannot establish the range for your role. Record the source date and whether the number describes base salary or total compensation.
A worked comparison
Illustrative figures, not market data: offer A has 100,000 in annual base pay, a 10,000 target bonus and 40,000 in equity vesting evenly across four years. At an unchanged share value, recurring annual compensation would be 120,000, of which 100,000 is base pay.
If offer B provides 112,000 base with no bonus or equity, A has the larger modeled total and B has more base cash. A signing bonus affects the year it is paid. Private equity, changing share prices and conditions attached to bonuses need separate scenarios.
Prepare a negotiation
Ask which level and responsibilities the offer reflects, whether the band has room and which components can change. Use relevant experience and another comparable offer when you have one. Avoid asserting a skill premium that your evidence cannot support.
A certificate may be relevant to a requirement, but its effect on pay is employer-specific. Ask about paid study time and exam reimbursement as separate terms.

Reported bands, by company
These 10 reported bands are retained for context. Their source types were recorded in the original research, but the figures have not been checked against dated, linked sources for each role and location. Treat them as unverified snapshots, not current offers or negotiation targets. Check the employer's current posting and separate base pay, bonus and equity before making a comparison.
| COMPANY | TITLE THE BAND COVERS | RANGE | BASE / TOTAL | RECORDED SOURCE TYPE |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Datadog | DevOps / Site Reliability Engineer | ~$385K | total | Public aggregator |
| Databricks | Infrastructure / ML Platform Engineer | ~$355K | total | Public aggregator |

| Microsoft | DevOps Engineer | ~$315K | total | Public aggregator |
| Stripe | Infrastructure / Site Reliability Engineer | ~$310K | total | Public aggregator |
| HashiCorp | Infrastructure Engineer | ~$295K | total | Public aggregator |
| Apple | DevOps Engineer | ~$237K | total | Public aggregator |
| Salesforce | DevOps Engineer | ~$220K | total | Public aggregator |
| Site Reliability Engineer (engineering ladder) | $197K – $768K | total | Public aggregator | |
| Amazon & AWS | DevOps / Systems Development Engineer | $165K – $360K | total | Public aggregator |
Datadog: Reported 90th percentile for infrastructure roles. A separate source puts the staff engineering ladder median higher again; treat both as directional.
Databricks: Reported 90th percentile for infrastructure roles.
Cloudflare: Reported 90th percentile for infrastructure roles.
Microsoft: Crowdsourced US median for the DevOps-titled role, blended across levels. Title-blended medians hide a wide spread.
Stripe: Reported 90th percentile for infrastructure roles.
HashiCorp: Reported 90th percentile for infrastructure roles.
Apple: Crowdsourced US median for the DevOps-titled role, blended across levels.
Salesforce: Crowdsourced US median for the DevOps-titled role, blended across levels.
Google: Reported US range across levels, entry through senior staff. Google SRE sits on the software engineering ladder, so a single median for the title understates the spread badly.
Amazon & AWS: Reported US range across levels L4 to L6. Amazon India SDE III medians are reported near one crore, driven largely by RSUs.
